Abbey of San Pietro in Valle

In 2007 we traveled around in the Italian provence of Umbria. For two nights we stayed over at the Abbey of San Pietro in Valle or as they say Abbazia San Pietro in Valle.

It was built in  the eighth century and was a Benedict abbey till in 1234 Gregory IX assigned the abbey Cistercian. In 1484 Pope Innocent VIII gives the estate to the abbey Cybo. Since 1917 the monastery fell into private hands and now restored, it is used as a hotel.

The church, which has remained separate next to the abbey, has a single nave, which dates from the seventh century. The apse dates from the twelfth century. It shows some magnificent medieval and Renaissance frescoes depicting scenes from the Umbrian school and the New Testament.

The court and church

Staying in this eighth-century abbey with its unique longobard carvings and frescoes is an experience. So far is has been one of the closest moments I could get to the experience of a  spiritual accommodation. We stayed at the Abbots room, a large suite in the main part of the abbey. I could have lived there for the rest of my life. Transforming the beautiful lawn of the hotel into a vegetable garden, grow some grapes and live off the crops and small hand work.

When you are in the region .. personally I’d say: It’s a must.
